VR 13 MEI, ZA 14 MEI, 20.30 NEDERLANDS VOCAAL LAB & KORZO MUZIEKPRODUCTIES VUURTONGEN VERKENNINGEN IN MUZIEKTHEATER Korzo muziekproducties en het Nederlands Vocaal Laboratorium organiseren dit seizoen het onderzoeksproject Vuurtongen, verkenningen in muziektheater. Met dit project krijgen jonge componisten de kans zich verder te ontwikkelen in de specifieke aspecten van muziektheater, zoals enscenering, theaterregie en choreografie. Vanaf het voorjaar werken twee jonge Haagse componisten Nicoleta Chatzopoulou en Tom Tlalim toe naar twee eindpresentaties in Korzo. Dit doen zij samen met regisseur Olivier Provily en choreograaf Keith-Derrick Randolph, met vier solisten van het Nederlands Vocaal Laboratorium (Christina Vötl, Gonnie van Heugten, Arnout Lems en Harm Huson) en met het Python Saxofoonkwartet. Het onderzoeksproject vormt de grondslag voor een avondvullende productie Vuurtongen dat in februari ‘06 in première gaat. WALLPAPER MOTHER/ THE SCREAM Componist Tom Tlalim en choreograaf Keith-Derrick Randolph presenteren het muziek theater stuk Wallpaper Mother. Inspiratie hiervoor vonden de makers in het tragische leven van de poet Anne Sexton (1928-1974) en haar boek Transformations. In dit boek worden de sprookjes van de Gebroeders Grimm vervormd tot verhalen over de pijn van ouderdom, moederschap, incest en verkrachting. Sexton leed aan depressies en haar poëzie hield haar op de been. Als in de Griekse mythe van Theseus waarin de draad van Ariadne in het labyrint van het monster Minotaurus levens redden, schrijft zij gedichten als redmiddel om te overleven. Wallpaper Mother wordt een cohesie van muziek, tekst, theater en dans waarin het leven, werk en de emoties van Anne Sexton centraal staan. Ademhalings- en fysieke oefeningen worden gebruikt als een methode om te duiken in Sexton’s manier van schrijven, die zij zelf omschrijft als ‘trance state’. Zowel de muziek, als de bewegingen worden afgeleid van deze – state of mind -, waarin simpele sprookjes plots omslaan in Ariadne’s draden waaraan deze dichteres zich met alle macht aan vastklampt, in een labyrint van krankzinnigheid. Nicoleta Chatzopoulou en Olivier Provily werken samen aan het muziektheaterstuk The Scream, voor vier solisten, koor en saxofoonkwartet. Dit stuk is geïnspireerd op het gelijknamige schilderij van de kunstenaar Edvard Munch. Het stuk schets een muzikale en theatrale droomtoestand, waarin vier personages onafhankelijk van elkaar, maar in hetzelfde notenschrift, hun versie van de schreeuw weergeven. NAGESPREK O.L.V. PAUL KOEK EN ROMAIN BISCHOFF Na afloop van de presentaties vindt er een nagesprek plaats, geleid door een expert op het gebied van hedendaags muziektheater, Paul Koek (13 mei) en bariton, dirigent en artistiek leider van het NVL, Romain Bischoff (14 mei).

VR 13 MEI, ZA 14 MEI, 20.30 NEDERLANDS VOCAAL LAB & KORZO MUZIEKPRODUCTIES VUURTONGEN EXPLORATIONS IN MUSIC THEATRE This season Korzo music Productions and the Nederlands Vocaal Laboratorium will jointly present a research project entitled Vuurtongen, explorations in music theatre. This project gives young composers the chance to further develop themselves in specific aspects of music theatre such as staging, theatrical direction and choreography. Since the spring, the two young composers Nicoleta Chatzopoulou and Tom Tlalim have been preparing two performances that will be presented in Korzo. They have been assisted by director Olivier Provily and choreographer Keith-Derrick Randolph, along with four soloists from the Nederlands Vocaal Laboratorium (Christina Vötl, Gonnie van Heugten, Arnout Lems en Harm Huson) and the Python Saxophone Quartet. The result of this research project will form the basis of a full production also entitled Vuurtongen to be premiered in February 2006. WALLPAPER MOTHER/ THE SCREAM The music theater piece Wallpaper Mother created by composer Tom Tlalim and choreographer Keith-Derrick Randolph is inspired by the tragic life of the poet Anne Sexton (1928-1974). In 1974 after suffering from postpartum depression, Sexton finally succeeded in committing suicide after several earlier attempts. In her book Transformations she transforms the fairytales of the brothers Grimm into stories about the pains of parenthood, motherhood, incest and rape. The creators have used this book as a staring point for their piece. As in the Greek myth of Theseus, where he follows Ariadne’s thread to find his way back through the labyrinth of the monster Minotaur, Sexton wrote poems as therapy holding on to her writing to stay alive. Wallpaper Mother is a cohesion of music, text, theater and dance in which the life, work and emotions of Sexton are central. In the piece breathing and physical exercises are used as a method to explore Sexton’s way of writing, which she called trance state. In as much as the music, electronic and acoustic, the movement is also diverted into this state of mind. Simple fairytales are transformed in this trance state into threads which the performer, as Sexton, holds onto using all her powers to stay alive in a labyrinth of insanity. The Scream is the product of collaboration between Nicoleta Chatzopoulou and Olivier Provily. The forces employed are four soloists, choir and saxophone quartet. The piece is inspired, as the title implies, by the famous painting The Scream by Edvard Munch. In a musical and theatrical dream state four performers each give their version of the Scream. DISCUSSION LEAD BY KOEK AND ROMAIN BISCHOFF The discussion will be moderated by Paul Koek, expert on the subject of modern music theatre (13 May) and by Romain Bischoff (14 May). Bischoff is known as a baritone and conductor internationally, he is also artistic director of the Nederlands Vocaal Laboratorium.
